  1. Q2:  What do I need to access Gopher?
  2.  
  3. A2:  You will need a gopher "client" program that runs on your local PC
  4.      or workstation
  5.  
  6.      There are clients for the following systems.  The directory
  7.      following the name is the location of the client on the anonymous
  8.      <ftp> site boombox.micro.umn.edu (134.84.132.2) in the directory
  9.      /pub/gopher.

  11.       Unix Curses & Emacs   :  /pub/gopher/Unix/gopher1.12.tar.Z
  12.       Xwindows (athena)     :  /pub/gopher/Unix/xgopher1.2.tar.Z
  13.       Xwindows (Motif)      :  /pub/gopher/Unix/moog
  14.       Macintosh Hypercard   :  /pub/gopher/Macintosh-TurboGopher/old-versions *
  15.       Macintosh Application :  /pub/gopher/Macintosh-TurboGopher *
  16.       DOS w/Clarkson Driver :  /pub/gopher/PC_client/
  17.       NeXTstep              :  /pub/gopher/NeXT/
  18.       VM/CMS                :  /pub/gopher/Rice_CMS/ or /pub/gopher/VieGOPHER/

  23.      Many other clients and servers have been developed by others, the

  48.      Most of the above clients can also be fetched via a gopher client
  49.      itself.  Put the following on a gopher server:

  52.        Host=boombox.micro.umn.edu
  53.        Port=70
  54.        Path=
  55.        Name=Gopher Software Distribution.

  58.      Or point your gopher client at boombox.micro.umn.edu, port 70 and
  59.      look in the gopher directory.

  62.      There are also a number of public telnet login sites available.
  63.      The University of Minnesota operates one on the machine
  64.      "consultant.micro.umn.edu" (134.84.132.4) See Q3 for more
  65.      information about this.  It is recommended that you run the client
  66.      software instead of logging into the public telnet login sites.  A
  67.      client uses the custom features of the local machine (mouse,
  68.      scroll bars, etc.)  A local client is also faster.
